Journalistic chapt. 39Chapter Thirty-Nine:

"I've done some things." Leon admitted into the open air. For early September, the air was cool, a refreshing turn for the unusually hot summer they had been cursed with.

Kathleen looked up from the book she was reading, Pride and Prejudice, Leon had noticed from the worn binding that it'd been one she read frequently. "We've all done bad things." She stated.

He sighed, "Not like I've done." He explained, "It'd different."

The book closed with gentle hands, and she turned to look toward him, "What makes you say so?" She asked.

Looking at her, he wasn't sure how to respond, "I'm not a good person." He said after Journalistic chapt. 39 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt. 38Chapter Thirty-Eight:

The smell was what had gotten to her. The choking, toxic scent from the mines made her cough and feel like death had gripped her throat. Millions of times she'd tried to reassure herself that'd her body would grow accustom to the harsh air, but millions of times she'd only proved herself wrong. The days were hot, the only retreat coming from the large lake that had seated itself next to the town. Every time she walked into the streets, she felt the overcrowding as people walked elbow-to-elbow in an attempt to maneuver through the streets and get to their place of work, or their homes.

Chapter Thirty-Seven:

Sitting alone at the kitchen table, the cool September winds were the only thing keeping the young man from breaking into a sweat. His trembling hand ran through his hair, and he felt like he would be sick. Quiet resonated throughout the home, and made him uneasy. He'd grown to expect the worst to erupt out of cool and quiet nights.

"Sam?" A soft voice questioned from the doorway.

With a shawl wrapped around her shoulders, Sam's mother placed a forehead on her son's forehead. "Are you feeling alright?"

"I'm alright. Is it alright if I talk to you?" Sam uttered, almost too quickly to be easily understooJournalistic chapt. 37 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.36Chapter Thirty-Six:

The August breeze blew warm against his face, as he looked out from the balcony of his home and allowed thoughts to blow through his head. He walked down the stairs of his home and the man exited soundlessly into the streets. Glances often caught the handsome man, but he ignored all of them, and kept his eyes on the roads ahead of him.

A sigh escaped his lips, and his eyes drifted to the people surrounding him, staring at him, whispering. It has since gone through his head to ignore them, throw the cold shoulder. If it seemed like the talk didn't get under his skin, it would prove to those around him that he couldn't bJournalistic chapt.36 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.35Chapter Thirty-Five:

All of her limbs quivered with a new anticipation, and a wash of relief ran over her. In the few moments left the blond woman traced the rails with her fingertips, admiring the rust that had spread on them like an infection. She'd never felt more empowered in her life, as though her purpose ran through her mind and leaked out of her pores.

With shut eyes she realized what she had to do, and as she heard the sound of the train the blonde woman scrambled off of the tracks and ran like she'd never ran before, not even when Leon was chasing her and Sam through the woods. Journalistic chapt.34Chapter Thirty-Four:

The blonde woman couldn't remember the last time she'd worn her pearl earrings. She looked herself over in the mirror: her blonde hair set into a tight bun, her face covered in a light makeup, her white hat falling at its large sides; and the pearl earrings she' been given as a child. The sinking weight that had gathered on her shoulders remained, and she felt that soon she would be able to visibly see it.

Her heels tapped gently against the wooden hallway, a reminder that she was alone in the mansion. For a moment she paused, biting her lower lip before turning back to the bedroom she had come from. Both gloved palmsJournalistic chapt.34 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.33Chapter Thirty-Three:

"Sam, stop walking around!" The gap toothed child called, her nose wrinkled in annoyance. In her small hands she gripped a broom that was currently being smacked against the ceiling.

"Sorry!" The young man called, only realizing at that moment that he had been walking around since the sun had first risen over the horizon. He sighed and went to his dresser to pull the stiff wood drawers.

Changing into his everyday clothes didn't take him long, and Sam walked out his door and went down the stairs, only to be assaulted by glares from Ella.

"Why were you walking around?" She interrogated, walking toward him with a glJournalistic chapt.33 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.32Chapter Thirty-Two

The world around the young man seemed to stop completely as walked down the street, avoiding traffic the best he could before sliding into an alley, seating himself slowly against a wall. Fingers shakily moved across grey newsprint as Sam looked at the photograph that was plastered against the front page of the newspaper. Vera Hays was standing stone-faced beside her fiancé, who had his arms snaked around her waist. Little things in the photograph began to send the gears in Sam's mind working quickly. The woman in the black and white photo seemed younger than the woman that he'd met in the woods, and her hair was tieJournalistic chapt.32 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.31Chapter Thirty-One:

Summer heat had already started to worm its way into the morning air. Vera groaned and rolled over in her bed, not wanting to leave the haven it offered. She raised her head, the ponytail she'd neglected to take out the night before proving to be a rat's nest of hair. Sweat already caked her brow, and the thought of having to put on another corset made her head fall back onto the pillow.

"Vera!" Helen called, knocking on the door of Vera's bedroom, "Breakfast is in an hour."

The blond woman's head rose again as her sister-in-law walked into the room. "Is it really going to take an hour to get ready?" She asked with aJournalistic chapt.31 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.30Chapter Thirty:

"And that's it, I came back." Sam finished, his hands crossed on the kitchen table. He didn't look up to see the looks his mother and the triplets must be giving him.

"Oh Sam.." His mother said, her eyes full of pity for her son. She reached her hand across the table and rested it on his.

The triplets looked back and forth between one another, all amazed by the adventure their brother had gone on, like something from a storybook.

"Vera sounds nice!" Ella perked up, wanting to shed light on the melancholy mood that had fallen like a blanket over the family.

"Shh!" Walter whispered, holding a finger to his lips, "I donJournalistic chapt.30 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.29Chapter Twenty-Nine:

A morning layer of fog had graced itself over the city, which had started to wake after a rich August night. A red head rested his hand on a freckled cheek as he awaited customers to arrive for their morning taste of the news. People had started leaving the comfort of their homes in exchange for the factory work that kept the bread on the table.

Sam inhaled at the sight, realizing at that moment how much it pained him to leave. The lower class was his life, and he knew he wouldn't have it any other way. "Welcome to Lakeside." He breathed, excitement fluttering his heart like the wings of a bird leaping from its nest.

Journalistic chapt.28Chapter Twenty-Eight:

A gasp escaped Vera's lips as the string's tightened around her chest. She looked in a mirror at herself, dressed in her undergarments as Helen tightened the corset. Her blonde hair fell in her eyes, not yet tied, she was sure Helen would be dying to tie it up for her.

"There!" The mousy woman said, her eyes sparkling, "Do you need help getting into your dress?"

"I'm fine." Vera stated as she stepped into her dress, pulling it up and doing the buttons one at a time.

"Let me at least do your hair. The Dowell's are coming over today after all! You must loom your best!" Helen insisted as she walked behind her and began Journalistic chapt.28 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.27Chapter Twenty-Seven:

"I found food." Rosie called as the sun began to disappear over the horizon, lighting the sky with oranges and pinks that mingle with the darkness that had started to rise.

"I.." Sam paused before looking down at the sticks he'd been rubbing together for what seemed like hours, "I haven't been so lucky with the fire!"

The nurse poked her head up from behind a bush and looked over, "It's mid August, Sam what in the world makes you think we'll need a fire?"

The young man looked down at his bundle of sticks dumbfounded, "Well, I was thinking with light, maybe."

Rosie rolled her eyes and walked toward him, her shirJournalistic chapt.27 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.26Chapter Twenty-Six:

The mousy woman looked upon the tall man in front of her and curtseyed before scurrying back up the staircase murmuring something like, "Yes Mister Hays, right away Mister Hays."

"Father I-" before Vera could finish a coarse hand whipped across her cheek. The blonde woman immediately brought her hand to the wounded area, flinching at its tenderness.

"How could you abandon your family?" His grey eyes shone with fury and sorrow, like a man who'd been deceived, "Do you know how selfish you're being, how unladylike, how rude?" He looked as though he meant to strike her again, but held back his hand.

Journalistic chapt.25Chapter Twenty-Five:

The sun beat down and caused sweat to roll down Sam's brow. He glanced beside him to see Rosie curled up and asleep on the grass. The wound on his forehead gave a dull throb under the cloth, but the young man believed that it had ceased bleeding. "Time to get moving, Rosie." He said with a mild slur as he shook the nurse's shoulder.

"I was awake" The nurse said sleepily as she sat up.

"I bet." Sam replied with a smirk.

"Are you sure you're alright to move?" She asked, worry mixed into her tone.

"Don't worry about me, I'm better than ever." He reassured as he stood up, holding out his arms in case he would fall.

Journalistic chapt.24Chapter Twenty-Four:

"Must you look so weary?" Leon complained as he drove irritation laced in his tone.

"Sorry if I'm not in the best of moods darling." Vera replied through gritted teeth as she turned to face away from him, her arms crossed.

Leon glanced back at her before he leaned his body to the backseat of the vehicle, pulling from it a suit jacket. He placed it on her lap before he resumed keeping his eyes to the road. "Cover your arms." Leon stated not turning to face her.

"So my father doesn't see what my fiancé gave me? Quite the wedding gift." Vera said humorlessly as she slipped the jacket over her shoulders, wincing Journalistic chapt.24 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.23Chapter Twenty-Three:

Weariness seeped itself through Sam's body, settling deep in his bones like sand in a riverbed. Beside him in the train Rosie sat, her delicate hands shading her face and smoothing back her hair. The young man shifted his gaze to her before resting a hand on her back as an attempt for consolation. Nearby, fellow passengers peaked over their shoulders and newspapers to take a look at the misfits that had seated themselves only a few minutes before the whistle sounded.

"It's over now Rose." He said simply, rubbing her back gingerly.

"You're wrong." The nurse retorted harsher than she had intended, rubbing her eyes, "Journalistic chapt.23 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.22Chapter Twenty-Two:

A sigh of relief fluttered out of Vera's chest as they the train station formed into view. "We're almost there." She spoke with confidence as she grabbed Sam's hand in hers.

"Then we can put this mess with Leon to rest, it's about time." Sam replied,
flashing a smirk at her, and she returned the favor with a smirk of her own.

"Boy! Then what will we do?" Vera inquired, swinging their arms as they walked.

"I can think of a few things." The young man spoke, glancing over at her.

"I bet you can." She said, turning to face him.

"Train leaves in ten minutes!" A masculine voice bellowed from the station, his callusJournalistic chapt.22 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.21Chapter 21:

Nimble fingers graced the pages of the medical journal as youthful eyes drifted across the faded lettering. Rosie's hand was pressed to her cheek as she pondered the knowledge and practices used in the civil war. She'd barely heard the bell of the door jingle when it opened, and less so heard the footsteps that moved on the hardwood.

"Excuse me?" The man's suave voice spoke as he looked down at the nurse, who was currently seated on the floor.

"Oh, my apologies sir!" She said quickly, closing the book and scrambling to her feet, "Are you ill?" She asked.

"Not exactly, are you Rosie by chance?" Leon said, his eyes darting oJournalistic chapt.21 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.20Chapter 20:

Sam could feel excitement run through his body, making his heart race in his chest. The sun had risen but an hour ago, and the young man was already walking around the clinic.

"You're awfully jumpy." Rosie commented, carrying a pile of bed sheets in her arms.

"Vera and I are leaving today; I suppose I should pay you and the doc." Sam said, a grin stretching across his face as he pulled the money out of his pants pocket.

"I suppose so; it'll come to $10.50." The small nurse said as she set the sheets on a counter, going to a cash register.

"Alright." Sam said, exhaling a bit at the cost as he drew out the money, lightly bJournalistic chapt.20 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.19Chapter Nineteen:

The warm water sent goose bumps over Sam's skin. The young man rested his head against the bathtub, feeling the grime that had gathered on his begin to fade. Fresh clothes rested on a chair nearest to the fireplace, which crackled pleasantly and left heat to radiate the room.

As his fingers began to prune he stepped out of the bath and slipped into the dry clothes. He paused after walking out of the room as his eyes drifted to Vera's temporary chambers. The young man's fingers trailed through his hair, moist after his bath, before he walked to her door and knocked.

"Come in." The blonde woman called from inside the rooJournalistic chapt.19 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.18Chapter 18:

Leon walked with his hands in his pockets until he came to the alley. His tongue pressed to his cheek before pulling a cigarette from his jacket and bringing it to his lips. A grimace came to his face as he dug in his inside pocket before he pulled out a crinkled matchbox.

A sound came to him as smoke lifted gently off his cigarette. When he turned he saw the two men from before huddled in a corner, smoke coming off their own cigarettes. The Man paused before walking, "You two", he stated simply before walking over.

The nasally voiced man's eyes widened as his cigarette trembled in his mouth, "We don't want nothin' to do witJournalistic chapt.18 by ~FrazzeledFish

Journalistic chapt.17Chapter 17:

"Sam?" Rosie said attentively as her hands gingerly opened the door to his room.

"What is it?" He said, sitting up in the chair he had seated himself in, the book he was previously reading falling to his lap.

"Vera's awake, would you like to see her?"

Before the small nurse had finished Sam had gotten out of the chair and started out the door.

"She's in a different room, over here." Rosie said, walking up to a closed door not far from Sam's room.

The young man opened the door and walked inside, a smile setting on his mouth as he walked over.

"What are you so happy about?" Vera asked from her bed.

Journalistic chapt.16Chapter Sixteen:

"Vera's sleeping." Rosie said, startling Sam, who was previously looking out the hospital room window.

"Is she alright?" He asked, looking at her with slightly widened eyes.

"We're looking out for infection; Doctor Mason says she'll be here a day or two." The small nurse answered as she gathered the empty dishes on his food tray.

The young man exhaled and ran his fingers through his hair, his mind drifting to the train tickets that rested snug in his back pocket. "Whatever it takes." He said with an unsure smile.

"Sir, if you don't mind me asking, what made the miss get shot?" Rosie asked, looking over at Sam with mJournalistic chapt.16 by ~FrazzeledFish
